FERRON READS

I have read Christina Dodd before but only in paperback so I was excited to get her new hardback book Virtue Falls.

VIRTUE FALLS
by Christina Dodd

"If Elizabeth Banner noticed the interest with which the townspeople talked about her in low tones behind her back, she gave no indication. And in fact, she didn't notice. For as long as she could remember, she had always been the girl who had watched her father kill her mother with the scissors."

If the first paragraph of chapter one doesn't catch your interest, then this book isn't for you. Elizabeth Banner, a noted geologist, has come back to Virtue Falls, Washington after 23 years. She didn't return to visit her father, who is now in  a memory care facility with Alzheimer's after his prison term. She returned to study rocks; more specifically to study the  Pacific Rim tectonic plates and subduction zones. Elizabeth's ex-husband, Garik Jacobsen, has also returned to Virtue Falls. Then a massive earthquake hits the area and secrets long buried come to light.

If you like suspense and romance, this book is for you.

The Boy on the Wooden Box  How the impossible became possible ... on Schindler's list by Leon Leyson

This is true story written by Leon Leyson (born Leib Lezjon) who grew up during the Holocaust. His memoir captures the innocence of a small boy who goes through the unthinkable. He survives leaving his home, moving to a Krakow ghetto, being held in a concentration camp and being separated from his family for months. Ultimately, it was Oskar Schindler who saved his life and the lives of over a thousand Jews by adding their names to his list of factory workers - a list that later became known as Schindler's List.

Believing no one would be interested in his story, Leon rarely spoke about his experiences until the film Schindler's List received worldwide attention. Schindler outwitted the Nazis by claming that his factory workers were essential to the war effort. Leon Leyson was not. He could only reach his machine's controls by standing on a wooden box. That box gave him a chance to look useful, and to stay alive.

FERRON READS

Find this new release and many more at the Ferron Library I've Got You Under My Skin by Mary Higgins Clark
I am a Mary Higgins Clark fan. I have liked her older books better than her newer ones, but I was pleasantly surprised with this book. The story starts with three-year-old Timmy Moran swinging on the swings at the playground when his dad, Dr. Greg Moran, is shot by a stranger. The shooter tells Timmy that he and his mother are next. Five years later Timmy continues to have nightmares and his mother and grandfather continue to watch over him. Laurie Moran, who now is a producer, is launching a TV reality series about unsolved cold cases. The first case is the twenty-year-old murder of Betsy Bonner Powell. Betsy was killed after coming home from hosting a graduation party for her daughter Claire and her three graduating friends. The murder has cast a cloud of suspicion over the people involved, mainly the four girls. Laurie assembles all of the players at the Powell mansion once again to relive those last hours. It seems that everyone has something to hide. There are now two murders to solve, and someone is watching. Congratulations to 86-year-old Mary Higgins Clark, may she continue to write mysteries for a long, long time.

CASTLE DALE LIBRARY PRESENTS...

John Grisham's A Time To Kill is one of the most popular novels of our time. Now we return to that famous courthouse in Clanton as Jake Brigance once again finds himself embroiled in a fiercely controversial trial-a trial that will expose old racial tensions and force Ford County to confront its tortured history. Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just earlier.

Ferron Reads

The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazie Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History by Robert M. Edsel with Bret Witter. It's a long title, a longer book and now a movie. What if I told you there was a major story about World War II that hasn't been told, involving an unlikely group of heroes you've never heard of, a group that didn't carry machine guns or drive tanks? These unknown heroes were known as the "Monuments Men". Their initial responsibility was to combat damage to structures and artifiacts. Then their focus shifted to locating and saving missing art. Most had been stolen by the Nazis. In a race against time, behind enemy lines, a special force of American and British museum directors, curators, art historians and others risked their lives scouring Europe to prevent the destruction of thousands of years of culture.
